Hi, I’m Francela.
I was born on October 15, 1980, in San Pedro de la Laguna, a beautiful town rich in culture and tradition, located by the shores of Lake Atitlán.
My life took an unexpected turn when, at just four months old, I lost my parents.
My father had to leave us to save his life due to the political conflict in Guatemala at the time.
Thankfully, my grandparents took me in and raised me, teaching me the values that shape who I am today.

Learning to Cook
At the age of 12, my grandmother introduced me to the world of cooking. She taught me how to prepare traditional Guatemalan dishes, using fresh, local ingredients and time-honored techniques passed down through generations.
As my passion for cooking grew, I spent 15 years working as a host mother at a Spanish language school, welcoming students from around the world and giving them a taste of our local cuisine.
The Birth of Guatemaya Cooking Class
Five years ago, I decided to take a bold step and start my own cooking school: Guatemaya Cooking Class. My goal is to share the richness and diversity of Guatemalan cuisine with visitors from all over the world, while also preserving our culinary heritage.
But my mission doesn’t end there. I wanted my business to give back to the community, so I donate 25% of my earnings to help children who want to continue their education and to support single mothers by providing scholarships for their children.
A Deeper Purpose
Every class I teach is more than just a lesson in cooking. It’s a chance to connect people with the heart and soul of Guatemalan traditions, allowing them to experience the warmth of our culture.
Through Guatemaya Cooking Class, I hope to not only share delicious recipes but also to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in my community.
I look forward to welcoming you to one of my classes and sharing this journey with you!
An unforgettable memory! I will always remember this day with Francela and her husband Felix, for their friendliness, professionalism, and charisma. We shopped, prepared, and shared a huge and delicious typical meal in their lovely kitchen. More than an excellent hands-on cooking class, this is an opportunity to enjoy a rich cultural experience with a kind and sharing family. I highly recommend Francela’s cooking class in San Pedro.
